Why are we doing this?
Over the next 10 years, the scale of planned development in Brighton and Hove is likely to exceed £2 billion.
Major developments will include the:
- Station Site Retail, Housing, Leisure and Education project
- King Alfred Leisure and Housing Project
- International Arena at Black Rock
- Brighton Marina Housing and Retail Project
- Brighton Centre replacement
- Preston Barracks Housing and Commercial project
- A new Community Stadium at Falmer
Brighton and Hove does not have the skilled workforce to deliver this scale of development.
Local unemployment is twice the regional average. Why not develop a local workforce? It means the profits will stay local.
How did it get like this?
Lack of investment in training over recent years has resulted in an ageing workforce that will not be around in ten years time and a younger workforce which is largely unqualified. The average age of a worker in this Industry will be 45 by 2007!
Why should you be interested?
The major developments planned for Brighton & Hove and Adur provide a unique opportunity for you as a local business to grow and benefit from more contracts and increased profits. Don’t let outside firms capture that market!
Domestic businesses will also benefit from this additional site work because of the drain these developments will have on the existing labour supply - but only if you grow your own workforce.
What do you need to do?
- Start thinking ahead!
- GET TRAINING NOW
- Start your business growing through apprenticeships
- Start qualifying your employees and sub-contractors with Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards
- Work with Jobcentre Plus to recruit local people
Remember, it is only by investing in local labour that the profits will stay local and local profits mean a better local economy which itself generates more work.
